چکیده

Earlier work has introduced a new optimization goal for DAG schedules: the “AREA” of the schedule. AREA-maximizing schedules are intended for computational environments—such as Internet-based computing (IC for short) and massively multicore computers—that would benefit from DAG-schedules that produce execution-eligible tasks as fast as possible. The earlier study of AREA-maximizing schedules showed how to craft such schedules efficiently for DAGs that have the structure of trees, as well as other, less well-known, families of DAGs. The current paper extends the earlier work by showing how to efficiently craft AREA-maximizing schedules for series-parallel DAGs, a family that arises, e.g., in multi-threaded computations. The tools that produce the schedules for series-parallel DAGs promise to apply also to other large families of computationally significant DAGs.

On Constructing DAG-Schedules with Large AREAs

The Area of a schedule Σ for a DAG G is a quality metric that measures the rate at which Σ renders G’s nodes eligible for execution. Specifically, AREA(Σ) is the average number of nodes of G that are eligible for execution as Σ executes G node by node. Extensive simulations suggest that, for many distributions of processor availability and power, DAG-schedules having larger Areas execute DAGs f...

Assessing the Computational Benefits of AREA-Oriented DAG-Scheduling

Many modern computational platforms, including “aggressive” multicore architectures, proposed exascale architectures, and many modalities of Internet-based computing are “task hungry”—their performance is enhanced by always having as many tasks eligible for allocation to processors as possible. The IC-scheduling paradigm for computations with inter-task dependencies—modeled as DAGs—was develope...

Bulk Synchronous Parallel Scheduling of Uniform Dags

This paper addresses the dag scheduling problem, proposing the bulk synchronous parallel (BSP) model as a framework for the derivation of general purpose parallel computer schedules of uniform dags, i.e., of dags that stand for tightly-nested loops with computable distance vectors. A general technique for the BSP scheduling of normalised uniform dags is introduced and analysed in terms of the B...

Race Detection and Reachability in Nearly Series-Parallel DAGs

A program is said to have a determinacy race if logically parallel parts of a program access the same memory location and one of the accesses is a write. These races are generally bugs in the program since they lead to non-deterministic program behavior — different schedules of the program can lead to different results. Most prior work on detecting these races focuses on a subclass of programs ...

On Batch-Scheduling Dags for Internet-Based Computing

The process of scheduling computations for Internet-based computing presents challenges not encountered with more traditional platforms for parallel and distributed computing. The looser coupling among participating computers makes it harder to utilize remote clients well and also raise the specter of a kind of “gridlock” that ensues when a computation stalls because no new tasks are eligible f...
